The two top Bishops in the Church of England are the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. The word ‘bishop’ comes from the Greek ‘episkopi’ and the first Bishops appeared very early on in Christianity, being seen as the main preachers and organisers of worship.

For a long time they were believed to hold their spiritual authority in a direct line from the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, since Bishops consecrate up-and-coming Bishops and the first Bishops were consecrates by the Apostles. This is called Apostolic Succession. In more superstitious times they were even thought to transfer special mystical powers to the next generation.

As the number of Christians grew, Bishops needed assistance in holding all the services and ceremonies that were needed, so more clergy were appointed under them and the status of Bishops became more lofty and their role evolved into more of an administrator and ambassador.

Today they oversee all the vicars/priests and chaplains in their diocese (assigned area) including those at church schools and public services such as prisons. The UK has around 140 Bishops, although since 1690 there have been none in Scotland, where church leadership is shared in a group structure instead of being placed with individuals.

There are some 3,500 Judges in the UK administering the three different legal systems of Northern Ireland, Scotland and England & Wales. Contrary to popular belief, a British Judge does not have a gavel. Instead, they command the court’s attention purely by their position, status and spoken deliberations. In a criminal case, the Judge also wears the white or silver-haired curly wig, a tradition dating back several centuries when such headgear was the fashion in high society.

Judges usually specialise in particular court types, as they need to have expert knowledge of precedents and the current law for each. Thus there are trial judges, tribunal judges, circuit judges, magistrates, appellate judges, constitutional judges and so on. They are appointed by a politically independent Commission that considers the candidate’s length of experience, their merit and ability to make decisions impartially, fairly and in accordance with British law.

The Judge’s role in overseeing a court’s procedures includes reading case paperwork, listening to arguments, advising on points of law, giving instructions to the jury and passing sentence, whether that is imprisonment or a fine. The Judge must evaluate the opposing perceptions of a case, and it is therefore a role perhaps not suited to many.

As a collection of islands set in what can be treacherous seas, it is unsurprising that Britain is where the lifeboat was invented. At the time ~ the late 1700s ~ there were around 1,800 shipwrecks every year on these shores and it was one in particular, in the mouth of the River Tyne in 1789, that was the catalyst.

Though the crew of Adventure were close to land, the appalling conditions prevented their rescue and they drowned as men on the dock watched helplessly.. A group of local businessmen set up a competition for the design of a lifeboat. Accounts differ but the upshot was that Yorkshireman Henry Greathead (1757-1818) emerged as the winner. He went on to manufacture 31 lifeboats from 1790 on, one of which has been preserved:-

Greathead never patented his design as he viewed it as a gift to humanity. His boats were 31′ x 10’6″ and the sides were packed with copper-encased cork. They could take 20 people and had 10 short oars for manoeuvrability.

Before Greathead, Lionel Lukin (1742-1834) of Essex had patented his “unimmergible boats” in 1785, which had pockets of air built in and a false iron keel to keep it upright. He made just one version of it, for Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland.
